Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in the Pamlico area area. Booking in the Fall or Spring is a great way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Look for your local Pamlico area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Narrow your Search:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Historic Alston-Charlotte Cottage in Downtown New Bern! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before booking the home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what is right for your vacation group.
- Some properties allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- Is your family looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
More considerations for your visit:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your smartphone.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all personal belongings. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a terrific time? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
